Think about it--even today, what's the benefit of linking 2 geographic points. Think about the ramifications of communication and trade--cultural diversity, exchange of goods, exchange of ideas, expansion. The impact of trade and commerce on communities--whether it's a broader monetary base or exchange of technology or industry and inventiveness.
